In response to a deadline set by the Central Bank of Nigeria, Governor Nyesom Wike has entered the debate over the redesign of some Naira notes. On Friday, February 3, while delivering a speech at a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) campaign rally in Okrika Local Government Area (LGA), Rivers State, the governor mocked the implementation. The redesign of the Naira, in Wike’s opinion, will not combat corruption because it primarily targets specific politicians.
Mr. President, I understand the pressure, Wike added. Please understand that this policy has nothing to do with attempting to fight corruption at all, as two of us are leaving at the same time. It has absolutely nothing to do with attempting to take on politicians. The goal of the policy is to punish the people who chose us to rule over them (sic). It is not our business to put people through hardship. We all understand how to combat both politicians and corruption. This one specifically does not enter at all.
