The Federal Capital Territory’s (FCT) satellite towns, the Satellite Towns Development Department (STDD) has initiated a cleanup operation at the Kuje Stadium Collection Point. This endeavor comes in response to the abandonment of the site by a waste management contractor, which left the area inundated with solid wastes, posing significant health risks to the local community and its surroundings.
Under the leadership of Hon Abdulkadir Zulkiflu, the STDD coordinator, the ongoing cleanup exercise seeks to swiftly address the waste accumulation and mitigate potential health hazards. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Mr. Zulkiflu emphasized the department’s commitment to ensuring a clean and safe environment for residents of satellite towns.
The intervention team, spearheaded by STDD’s acting director of environmental services, Mr. Dauda Garba Akun, swung into action following repeated warnings issued to the contractor, both verbally and in writing. Despite assurances from the contractor to adhere to waste evacuation protocols, the failure to fulfill these commitments necessitated immediate intervention by the STDD to avert the looming threat of epidemics in the Kuje area.
Mr. Zulkiflu reiterated his appeal to residents, particularly those in suburban areas, to refrain from indiscriminate waste disposal practices. Emphasizing the importance of community cooperation in maintaining cleanliness, he urged residents to utilize designated waste disposal sites and refrain from dumping refuse in drainages and along roadsides.
The cleanup operation at the Kuje Stadium Collection Point underscores the STDD’s proactive approach in addressing environmental challenges and safeguarding public health. By taking decisive action to tackle waste management issues, the department aims to create a conducive living environment for all residents of FCT’s satellite towns.
As the cleanup efforts continue, the STDD remains committed to fostering community awareness and participation in waste management initiatives. Through collaborative efforts between government agencies and residents alike, the vision of a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable future for FCT’s satellite towns can be realized.
