In a startling turn of events at Ikeja High Court on Tuesday, Jan. 23, Ayoko Oluwatobi, a 25-year-old facing a six-count charge, plunged the courtroom into tension by attempting suicide during his exit. The charges against Oluwatobi include causing grievous bodily harm, property damage, and membership in an unlawful society.
The dramatic incident unfolded after Oluwatobi’s legal counsel submitted a bail application, urging the court to grant him bail on lenient terms. However, the prosecution vehemently opposed, citing concerns about the defendant being a flight risk. Justice Hakeem Oshodi, after considering arguments from both sides, adjourned the case until April 9 for a ruling on the bail application.
As the courtroom awaited the judge’s decision, Oluwatobi, seemingly distressed, left the dock and approached the prosecution team. He tapped them on the back, claiming they were his friends and should release him. His erratic behavior escalated when, while being escorted out, he began headbutting the wall, exclaiming, “I want to die; I can’t wait till April.”
In a shocking move, Oluwatobi climbed the courtroom window, aiming to jump from the two-story building. Prompt intervention by court police officers and a correctional service officer prevented the potentially fatal act. The officers successfully restrained the defendant, grabbing onto one of his legs to avert the suicide attempt.
The incident has raised concerns about courtroom security and the mental well-being of individuals involved in legal proceedings. The case is now adjourned, and Oluwatobi remains in custody as the legal process continues.
